South End: The History of Our Historic Neighborhood

At The Gin Mill, we take pride in residing in Charlotte's historic South End neighborhood. Today, you will find Charlotteans strolling up and down the rail trail by day and enjoying a drink and a bite to eat with friends by night in this lively and energetic community. However, South End wasn't always the exciting tech and entertainment hub it is today. In fact, our neighborhood has a long and rich history of pioneering development and trailblazing growth in the greater Charlotte area.

So, read along with us as we dive into the extensive history of South End Charlotte!

During the first quarter of the 19th century, the Carolina Gold Rush brought people to what is now known as the South End. It all started when a farmer named Samuel McCombs accidentally found a few gold nuggets on his farm, prompting a search for more gold, which would return very favorable results. This discovery led to the construction of the McComb Mine in 1825, and with it came an influx of several other mining companies setting up shop in hopes that they would also prosper.

The construction of Charlotte's railroad in 1852 led trains through the South End area and was the first rail line to come to the Piedmont region. The railroad was built through the combined effort of the local government and citizens, mostly farmers and townsfolk, marking the beginning of unstoppable growth in the area.

1891 brought streetcars to the Dilworth area. This was the first take on mass transit in the South End, leading to increased growth and prosperity in the area.

With Daniel Augustus Tompkins's establishment of the Atherton Cotton Mill in 1892, Charlotte began to industrialize heading into the 20th century. At the turn of the century, the area turned into an industrial park, with other factories scattering the area, such as Mecklenburg Flour, Charlotte Shuttle Block Factory, and Southern Card Clothing Co., among others. 

Charlotte soon became known as the industrial capital of the Carolinas and the center of textile production across the region, shifting the local economy from agrarian to industrial. The rest of the 20th century saw the city continue to rise in the areas of engineering, machinery, food production, and high-end clothing. 

At the turn of the 21st century, South End Charlotte became a tech hub and sought-after residential area. With the Dot Com Boom in full effect in Charlotte, South End attracted tech startups such as iXL and McGuireWoods to the area. Breweries began to boom just after the recession in 2011 when zoning laws were changed, and the growth of the South End population created a residential boom, with apartments and condos popping up constantly in this now desirable neighborhood. 

Since then, South End continues to grow tremendously, with new apartments, bars, and restaurants popping up all the time. We are honored to be a part of this growth and to call South End home.
